Full Description

Alfred Wallis was a former seaman and scrap metal merchant who began painting at the age of 70 using household paint on scraps of cardboard.His work, characterised by its childlike simplicity and unique perspective, captured the essence of the Cornish coast and maritime life.

Wallis's art attracted the attention of progressive artists like Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who were drawn to his authenticity and unconventional style.They incorporated his ideas and techniques into their own work, creating a distinct artistic movement in St Ives.

The ‘Circle of Alfred Wallis’ wasn't a formal organisation but rather a loose association of artists who admired and were inspired by his work.They shared his work with other artists, including Denis Mitchell, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and John Wells, further expanding his influence.
