It was not until the age of 35 after her husband’s death that Hedvig Tegnér was able to realise her artistic dreams. She studied portrait painting for a short time for Fredrik Krebs in Lund and watercolor painting for Anna Palm in Stockholm before traveling to Paris to study with Christian Krohg at the Académie Colarossi 1902–1903 and 1911–1912. Tegnér is represented at Malmö Museum and Lund University Art Museum, among others.
