The Cockerel

A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist style still life composition, painted in oil onto board by the established Swedish artist Richard Björklund (1897–1974) whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmo Museum, Ystads Art Museum, and others.
This painting portrays a tabletop scene with what appears to be a cockerel figurine, a pot, as well as a bottle.
Working under a largely modernist ethos and containing elements of abstraction and cubism, the artist has skilfully deconstructed and simplified the scene down to geometric shapes and colour blocks, rather than focus on realistic detail.
A limited colour palette of muted tones—such as blue, grey, beige, and white—accentuated by vivid reds for the figurine’s comb and beak, have been used. This helps to create a balanced contrast, as well as create depth and space within the picture.
The brushstrokes are expressive and visible, adding a light tactile quality to the piece.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
Size: 59 x 51 cm (including frame)
